If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.

God created the natural numbers, the rest is the work of man.

My name is Matt. I use math to study complex systems and group dynamics, particularly how groups make decisions (mathematical democracy) and how group structure influences group behavior (network science).
I earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Dartmouth College under Feng Fu for my thesis titled, “Evolutionary Dynamics of Collective Action Problems.” From 2022 to 2024, I was a postdoctoral associate at Yale University working with Nicholas Christakis in the Yale Institute for Network Science and the Human Nature Lab. After that I spent a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of the Holy Cross.
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Colby College.
